I've been experimenting in making dashi, a Japanese soup stock made with konbu (kelp) and dried bonito shavings (fish). I always thought miso soup was mostly flavored with dashi, but I understood how wrong I was when I went and finally bought miso. I'm stupid, yes, but it's called that because the predominant flavor really is miso. On the upside, I know how to make miso soup (and after all the dashi trouble, I suspect I could have made it with just water and miso).

I bought a Japanese grammar book today. I guess my project during my time off is to learn a funny ideographic language that isn't Chinese or Korean. Let's see, Ryan desu...
