Driving to Seattle and back, stopping at several volcanoes dead, dormant, and active along the way. Above, a cinder cone (named Cinder Cone) in Lassen National Park. Apparently one of the motivations for making volcanoes such a large percentage of the west coast park system is to prevent settlement overly nearby in case of catastrophic eruption.

Along with Lassen in the photo gallery are Castle Crags near Mt. Shasta, Crater Lake, and Mono Lake near Yosemite. The layering effects are caused by residual wildfire smoke, of which there was an abundance. You could smell it in the air along the I-5. I had to rearrange my itinerary to push the Lassen visit later as several of its access roads closed due to fires.

I hiked about a mile's worth of elevation total and just shy of a marathon's worth of total trail distance.
