Project Gutenberg publishes public domain text in a plain text (ASCII) format on the web. This is an incredible amount of work, but it's highly unfortunate that the work began before XML was conceived of; the books are inconsistently published and therefore impossible to refactor into something else, like a readable page.
I have no idea how legal this service is, but for now, it takes an Etext and reformats it for reading on the web. I hope to add text bookmarking and custom stylesheet definitions for readers in the future. For now, go to the PG Catalog, choose a host, find a text, and use the following form to enter the URL for an Etext for display (this will be simplified...eventually). Please be patient, books are long and processing, while simple, has a lot of information to deal with.
All Etexts come with a standard Project Gutenberg legal disclaimer which must remain with the text. This service will not ever consider removing it during processing.
