searching for music on the web is nigh impossible. there should be a search engine where you can at least type in some notes and see what kind of a match comes back. that could make sense, yes? i finally located a song i hear all the time in movies, very mellow and melancholy, an extremely simple style: trois gymnopedie no. 1: lent et douloureux by erik satie, a french composer from the 19th-20th centuries.

i just happened to hear the intro of it in the middle of corrina, corrina, whereupon the title character mentions that a french composer wrote it at the age of 22. she even says his name, but i couldn't tell what she said when i heard it. i tried to find her line on the web, and the only google hit was a transcript with 'eric sachs.' how did they get 'sachs' from satie, i wonder. i finally solved the problem by looking at a list of well known french composers and seeing which ones were named eric, since sachs didn't sound particularly french. luckily there was only one on the list. from there, i stuck satie's name into google and eventually found a description for a music file that matched exactly with what was running through my head.
