The government of Thailand killed 23 people per day for three months to end its drug trafficking problem. And then it bragged about it.

The government of China swept SARS under the carpet until it began to affect the rest of the world. Even now they probably aren't telling the entire truth about how bad it is (though, in truth, I don't think it's anywhere nearly as bad as the media is making it out to be).

I wonder how it came to pass that human life in Asia is valued less than government policy bravado. It matters so much that the governments present an outward appearance of problem-less societies that they're willing to let large numbers of their own citizens die to keep up the image?
