There doesn't seem to be much documentation on modifying the styling for phpicalendar (which happens to be "willingly offline" today - I wonder what the story is there). Much (but not all) of the color can be controlled for a theme by the CSS included; some degree of image modification is also necessary.

In case you care to try your hand at it, I attempted to lightly document the CSS.

My attempts at customization are being exercised over at the Cambridge Black Pastors Conference calendar.
