Daylight saving time is a stupid invention. It didn't help anybody when they started this non-idea, and it certainly doesn't help anybody now. Except, surprise, the oil industry.

I am not big on blaming everything on oil, but this is a great example of its present hold. Instead of investing in the innovation of new sources of renewable energy that don't look like fossil fuel, we have lobbyists asking Congress to change the start and end dates of DST (original link to CNN dead) to include two more months so we as a society can use less barrels of oil. Maybe if we didn't depend on oil, we wouldn't have to drill in 'federally protected' reserves, watch our economy flit about the price of one barrel, blow hundreds of dollars per person on refueling cars, and deal with certain political situations with a dark, overhanging cloud of economic ulterior motives.

I am also not optimistic about the oil industry's replacement. Will our energy providers ever behave better than this?

sigh...

Hey so one of the guys pushing this through is rep Ed Markey (D-MA) of the MA 7th district.. so if you live in {Arlington, Belmont, Everett, Framingham, Lexington, Lincoln, Malden, Medford, Melrose, Natick, Revere, Stoneham, Waltham, Watertown, Wayland, Weston, Winchester, Winthrop, Woburn} he might listen to your complaints since you're one of his constituents. =)

rant point #1: If they insist on this path, why don't they just redefine "EST" to be GMT-4 all year round? As stupid as it sounds, I'd rather do that.

rant point #2: Isn't it strange that they call it "savings" in the summertime, when there's more daylight? is the reason they don't do this year-round because they just give up in the winter--there's not enough sunlight to bother saving anyway?
