If you're using Windows, you should probably not come to me for help any longer. I left that world behind before the inherent weakness of a wide-open networked operating system invited spam, worms, crackers, and loads of other junk directly into your machine without any user interaction. I now know very little about cleaning out the trash, and I don't have any personal incentive to learn since I'm no longer an active user. I might have a chance if your system is pre-XP, but I doubt it since I'm sure all of the new problems cross version boundaries.

I apologize if I've been worse than useless in recent history in solving your issues. My best advice to you is to go Apple or wipe out Windows and install Linux.

If you can't do either, then backup your data, download the latest Windows Service Pack, burn it to disc, and wipe out Windows. Reinstall Windows and install the service pack before you even think about going back online. Find a decent firewall, turn off all the services you don't need, avoid most filesharing applications, and use any browser and mail client besides Internet Explorer and Outlook. You then might have a chance to use your computer instead of fighting it. But your chances are far greater if you change operating systems.
