Independence Hall is open to the general public with no restrictions on July 4th, although there's a bag check at the gates. The black fellow in front of me was flummoxed for a moment and asked for a clarification: "No bags can walk through," particularly since his informer was also black.

Is what's inside worth a half hour wait in line? At least it's temperate outdoors. I'll find out in a couple minutes whether the one free day (also free after 5 the three days before and day after) is worth it. Hold your breath.

Breathe again. There are some talented rangers out there, but standing and gawking at an exhibit is not my strong point.
