Summarizing this perspective notionally on ultra-rich philanthropy in America is a compression not worth trying. Long and dense, tracking across history and vast arenas of concern for the poor, it really requires reading on its own. Agree or not, it is refreshing to hear a cogent critique on the state of today's "philanthrocapitalist" efforts - and to consider why they are framed as the only worthy response to the world's ills.
