What we have here is failure to communicate. Who was it who said mankind has only 25 (or something) stories to tell, and everything's just a variation on those stories? After watching Cool Hand Luke, it seems like Hollywood's plot writers have been drinking deeply from Paul Newman's roles, if not the original 25. Every generation has its Luke, like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, or Shawshank Redemption, or The Green Mile - do let me know when the next prison story with a nonconformist protagonist that all the good inmates look up to who ends up sacrificing something of himself comes out. It's a winning combo. I'm now pretty sure the ultimate joke about The Hudsucker Proxy is that it tells the heroic tale of all of Paul Newman's films' stories, draws from several of their memorable scenes ("night in the box" / "dock ya"), is even a period piece taking place in the days of his youth - and instead of taking his usual protagonist's role, Newman himself is the bad guy. Brilliant, those Coen brothers. I can eat fifty eggs. |
